Cries that Remind
by Trent Brown
When we read through Psalm 86, we see the trust and confidence of the psalmist in The Lord. I wonder if you can resonate with the psalmist, as you read through it. Can you recall a time in your life where you pleaded with the Lord to incline His ear to hear your cry? Have you ever asked for His providential hand of protection as you have requested that He would preserve your life? Can remember the times that you’ve called upon His grace?
I think it is probably safe to say that we all have been in the steps of the psalmist. We’ve been in that space where we are in a posture of desperation before our Lord pleading for His help. The beautiful thing about that pleading is that it is being done in an attitude of gratitude knowing that He is the only one who can actually redeem and restore us from those very things.
You see the same thing from the psalmist. You can see his confidence in The Lord, to whom he is praying. In verse 8 we see a declaration that there is no one like Him and that his works are like no other.
This Is the very reason we cry out to Him. We trust in the fact that He will meet us in the “space” that we need to be met in. That He will ultimately fulfill our every need and desire. That He will bring clarity to chaos, restoration to brokenness, and beauty from the ashes.
Knowing these things, the psalmist asks that he would be taught the ways of the One he adores and longs to follow. He wants to live in such a way that his life would reflect the truth, beauty, and goodness that is found in Him.
As followers of Christ, we are image bearers of the King. I pray that as we understand our identity it will fuel our activity. As we put feet to what He has called us to (our activity), that we would do so in such a way that we are willing to find our complete and ultimate satisfaction in Him and Him alone. As we find our satisfaction in Him, He is most glorified in us. Yes, there will be times that we are crying out in desperation for Him to hear us, be near to us, be gracious to us, and to restore us. These cries simply remind us that He is truly the only One who can. We lean into the hope that He will meet us in that space in such a way that others would see His provision and protection upon our lives and be drawn closer to the One who holds us!
