Blessing for Obedience

Blessings for Obedience

by Trent Brown

3 “If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, 4 then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 Your threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last to the time for sowing. And you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land securely.

Reading through this portion of Leviticus, I was reminded of another “if” statement in scripture that is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14. It states, “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” There seems to be a pretty basic principle at work here. That principle is one of obedience. If we are obedient to the things that He is asking of us, it seems to help set the stage for His blessings. I am not advocating some sort of prosperity gospel but rather a gentle reminder that obedience allows us to walk in whatever the Lord wills. That could even be a movement towards blessing through suffering.

So we see in 2 Chronicles the blessing of forgiveness and healing that comes with God’s people humbling themselves, praying, seeking His face, and turning from their wicked ways.

In verse 3 of Leviticus 26, we have another “if” statement. There is another promise or blessing that comes from our obedience. It states that if we walk in the statutes and commands of the Lord, He will give rains in their season, and the land will yield its increase, and the trees of the field will yield their fruit.

The Lord knows what we need and longs to provide those things to us, but oftentimes we have to go through the process. Just like the trees need rain to grow and yield their fruit, we too need our sustenance to be found in Him because He causes the growth.

Not only is He the one who causes growth and sustains us through the process- the blessings He gives are given in abundance. In verse 5 it talks about the harvest, the sowing, and the abundance of provision which lead to security. It is what He does. He creates safe spaces where He pours out his blessings.

The question for us is simple. Are we willing to be obedient to the things that He is asking of us? If we will walk in His statutes and commands, He says He will bring the rains.

Poetic Devices for God's Glory
October 21st, 2024
I am sure some people read the title and had flashbacks of their high school English teacher belittling them because they could not identify a metaphor. While I am an English teacher, my hope is to not make you feel silly, but show you how these literary features glorify God. Let’s take a look at Isaiah 44:21-22 and see how God’s glory is being shown through a chiasmus and simile. ChiasmusVerse 21...
The Flower Fades. The Word Saves.
October 14th, 2024
In Isaiah 40:6-8, we read (often a popular funeral passage): All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.Peter also quotes these words of Isaiah in his first epistle. But when he does, h...
Misplaced Trust, but Our Righteous God
October 7th, 2024
Man is no stranger to putting trust in the wrong places. We placed our trust in a piece of food in the garden, and we see how that turned out for us. That should have been enough to teach us that we cannot rely on anything or anyone other than God. Our world was immediately subjected to sin, death, disease, pain, and loss—yet we continue to choose folly over faith in God daily. The good news is th...
A Reminder from James (As We Study Isaiah)
September 30th, 2024
Courtney Doctor writes:James tells us that the law of God (or God’s Word) is like a mirror. It reveals ourflaws. And just like a bathroom mirror, the longer I spend peering, the more flawsI see. If I just glance and quickly look away, I’ll miss the revelation of my sin. Forthe Word of God to reveal the things in us that need to be fixed, we have to spendtime gazing into it: reading it, thinking ab...
He is so Good to Us
September 23rd, 2024
Reflecting on Isaiah 12 helps us, as God’s people, to rejoice in His salvation, preservation, and restoration. This beautiful snippet of Scripture is one of praise that centers on the goodness of God. We see that He is our salvation, our comforter, our strength, and our song. We also see that He dwells among us and does glorious deeds.I am so thankful that the Lord is good to me. I am reminded dai...
