A Prayer of Abraham’s Heirs
by Julie Johnson
Oh Lord,
We long for integrity and we hope to honor you as we ought. But the perpetual pattern of our wrongdoing is unmistakable.
Revisiting again the faults of our fathers,
We live in fear of man and in contempt of Your holiness, forgetting that You are here with us to cast out fear. What can man do to us?
But as we inherit the sin nature of our lineage, so we also inherit their promise.
You bless us, O Lord, disregarding our sins. You heap upon us grace after grace simply because you have chosen us as the broken ones who will hold forward your Name.
We sow in the land where we transgress,
And we reap in the same year a hundredfold.
Give us the wisdom, O Lord, not to take these great graces for granted.
For we are wealthy indeed.
And when we find that the world will not have us, may we move forward seeking You; digging again the wells of our fathers that brought forth life, reminders of your precious promises.
And when we meet quarrels over wells of Living Water, remind us to turn from enmity, moving away from contention and toward the broad places where You have made room for us.
Lead us to Beersheba, the city of oaths, where we find Your perfect faithfulness as evident to us as it was to our imperfect kin. And may the watching world see our shortcomings measured against your fidelity, and say of us and of our journeying,
“We see plainly that the Lord has been with you.”
Father, we know and we feel and we believe that You have.
Amen.
